Ryan grew up in West Simsbury, Connecticut and is a die hard Whalers fan. He graduated from the United States Naval Academy in 2000 and served two combat tours with the Marine Corps in Iraq. Prior to joining the Rubicon Project Ryan ran a web design and marketing firm in San Diego, California.
